Coyote
April 1, 1994 - August 13, 2008
Handler: Marcy Koenig
What a great ride we had together, Coyote!

9/9-14/05 Hurricane Katrina, Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi

Coyote and I and four other dog handlers were deployed as members of the Disaster Mortuary Response Team (DMORT). The five of us were responsible for searching for bodies along the gulf coast of Mississippi. (Due to DMORT confidentiality, I cannot discuss any search results.) This was a team effort with us being deployed together, eating together and living together in a refrigerated trailer. The scope of the destruction was overwhelming and could not be caught on camera. We worked the dogs in 20 minute shifts because of the heat and humidity. I was pleased that at 11 years old Coyote was still able to navigate the debris so I could send her to the top to search and then underneath.

Two years later Andy and I returned to see the areas Coyote and I had worked. The debris had been removed but only 10% of the houses had been rebuilt.
