Alpental
1030 callout for missing male skier near Alpental. We responded with 6 airscent teams, 7 personnel total over the three day period. The subject had been skiing on New Year's Eve but did not return by that evening. We deployed airscent teams in the immediate vicinity of the parking lot and along the winter trail to Source Lake to investigate the possibility that he was in a snow cave near his car. The subject was located on the 4th when the search was shifted to the Melakwa Lake/Pratt Creek drainage based on eyewitness accounts received on the 3rd. His gear was spotted by a ski team near Tuscahatchie Lake. The subject was airlifted to Harborview with a core temperature less than 90-degrees. A month after being found, he had both legs amputated below the knee due to irreversible frostbite damage. (103 hrs)

Tinkham, I-90
1100 start for missing 41 yo male camper at Tinkham. We responded with 6 personnel. The subject was last seen on the 18th when dropped off by his girlfriend. The weather had been near freezing, with 6+ inches of snow on the ground. He was said to have recently had back surgery. The girlfriend stopped by on the 25th and his campsite was empty, with some materials cached behind a stump. His cache had various items, but no wallet, keys or ID. The trailing was inconclusive. The airscent teams scoured the campground as well as areas west and east of the campground. One last area across the road was searched as well. The teams were pulled from the field by KCSO after the investigation determined he was suicidal and had discussed harming himself. The subject showed up at a Dr.'s appointment on 2/6/04. (35.5 hrs)
