Orcas Island, San Juan County
0600 start for planned search for missing 44 yo male on Orcas Island, San Juan County. We responded with one trailing and six airscent teams, 6 personnel total. The subject had disappeared eight days earlier after leaving a suicide note and abandoning his car near a lake. We were called in to assist the San Juan county teams who had been working for a week without luck. The airscent teams initially covered areas previously searched and then covered new areas. Dog team 2 worked a trail from the PLS to a quarry and back to, and beyond, the PLS, but stopped working due to time and needing a rest. In the second round of searches, Trulee, and his handler Greg Varney, located the subject on the hillside above the vehicles, approximately 150 yards up the hill. The subject was deceased, with what appeared to be a self-infliced gunshot wound to the chest. The body was still in rigor mortis. Additionally, the body was in an area previously searched in the first few days of the search. (103 hrs)
